2.1. Q: What is the Mass Balance Model?

A: The Mass Balance Model (MBM) is a theory for explaining weight gain and loss, particularly that of fat mass. It is a replacement for the Energy Balance Theory (EBT), sometimes known by the acronym CICO—which stands for Calories In, Calories Out.

The MBM posits that bodyweight is managed by the Law of Conservation of Mass, not the Law of Conservation of Energy. It has been shown to better represent expected weight gain/loss calculations as compared with real clinical data.

2.4. Q: Do carbs help my workout?

A: They certainly can, if you are reaching exhaustion. Even for those in ketosis, a small amount of supplemented glucose can reduce exhaustion. If you are an endurance athlete, as little as 10 g of glucose taken once every two hours can be beneficial. This is because the symptom of exhaustion is not due to muscle fatigue but due to the muscle sucking up too much glucose from the bloodstream and starving the brain.

2.5. Q: What is the Cube Rule of Food?

A: The Cube Rule of Food actually has nothing to do with nutrition. It is a way of determining what category a food falls into, finally solving the debate over whether or not a hotdog is a sandwich.
